Pullets roosting
« on: June 30, 2012, 10:18 »
Hi all
My nine seekers have taken to roosting on the six foot wire partition dividing their run from my hens. When I go to close the coops for the night the legbars panic and fly into the main run and it takes ages to round them up.
Question- are they too young for wing clipping?
My run is very secure so I'm not so worried if they roost but there's no doubt one of my hens would attack them if she found them in the main run and the legbars are really small.

How old are they?

You may have noticed that chicks moult constantly, and they don't get their adult feathers until they are about 14-16 weeks old.  This is the earliest I would probably clip, otherwise you have to keep re-doing them as they shed their feathers

Have you tried hanging a torch in their coop at night Jhub?  That may tempt them to go in to investigate.  (Joyfull's idea originally I think?)

Personally, because i let my chicks into the garden, while im out there, i wing clip at around 2 months ( 7-8 weeks ) as i wont be running around the gardens/alley trying to catch them.

Tried a light but they seem to like roosting up high.
I've installed a small tarp so they don't have that option any more.
Thanks guys
