I hope not just been given several packets of old onion sets that have just started to sprout so perhaps as its been such a bad year i can at least get a crop of pickling onions  :(

I am afraid it is too late now.  They need to get established before the days start to shorten.  I thought I was pushing it a bit in mid May.   You might be able to use them as spring onions though.

it will be late. if you got sets then the latest you can try is end of May. I had turbo variety last year and i managed to get decent sized onions but that was due to regular feeding and watering.
