Disappointing potato yield
« on: July 09, 2012, 11:52 »
Am I just pulling my potatoes up too soon? I sowed Maris Pipers and Nadines this year, they flowered and then the flowers disappeared so I thought it was time. The yield has been pretty poor though with only a few albeit well formed spuds on each plant.

Has anyone else had the same experience this year? I am not sure I can blame it on the weather, and the soil was well manured last autumn with good, well-rotted stuff.
The idiots are winning.

How long have they been in for?  plus they seem a couple of weeks later this year because of the poor weather :(

I put them in the last week of March. The foliage hasn't died back at all. I'll wait a bit.

Nadine are 2nd earlies so need 16-18 weeks before lifting- plus an extra couple for the weather.
Yours have only been in about 15 weeks   ::)

Maris Pipers are maincrop, so you shouldn't be expecting to harvest these until much later, after the foliage has died down.

Mine didnt go in till april midway through,I got a load of tiddlers 2 weeks ago.
1 week a go i got loads of egg sized ones.
This week i got some whoppers :)
These were all maris bard.
So a week makes a big difference and 2 weeks makes them a whopping difference :)
Oh and there aint many miles between us, So leave them another 2 weeks i say :)

Maris Bard is an early potato so you would expect it to be ready about now - Maris Piper is maincrop so will not be ready anytime soon.

It does help to know what type your potatoes are before you work out harvesting dates

I am sorry for the confusion, everyone, but I have Maris Bards not Pipers. Even then it seems I should leave it a few more weeks at least.
