How long can they live alone???????
« on: June 20, 2012, 17:54 »
About two and a half weeks ago my youngest daughters African Pygmy mice escaped.

We soon found one swimming for its life down the toilet but there was no sign of the other at all apart from one swift sighting the day after it escaped.

Well we have been away as have the kids but last night we found the mouse on my daughters Welsh dresser!  These things have a very specific diet so how its lasted this long is a mystery!??!

I should say its still as fat as ever as well so any ideas on what its been eating??

Oh I caught it today!!

I am just amazed that it lasted so long alone with no easy access to the right food or water!

Clearly it doesn't need such specific food and the pet shop has been ripping you off! A diet of dust balls, odd socks and dropped biscuit crumbs is obviously adequate!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

With the occasional fluff encrusted boiled sweet as a treat

Years ago we had a carpet delivered and it was left in a roll on side of the stairs.
The next night I woke up with the feeling that something had touched my hair. Then I heard a rustling. I switched the light on but could not see anything.
Later on I saw a mouse running up the curtains in the light from the street light.
I slept downstairs for the rest of the night.
After work I searched the whole room and found a fruitgum on the window ledge with teeth marks in it, and a small furry body which slid out of a slingback shoe as I picked it up.
Moral of story, don't live on a diet of sweets alone.

Reminds me of when Dad was putting in central heating, with the floorboards up mice moved in.... I woke up one night and there was a mouse in my bedroom, we tried to catch it without killing it, but it was faster than us, in the end I lost my temper, well it was about 3am, threw my slipper at it and killed it  :(  Another time,  Mum always put the oven on before opening the door, this day she did it the opposite way about, door open first..... luckily, because on the shelf was sitting a mouse!  He could have been roasted as it was a gas oven!

When I was a teenage I had a trio of white mice (all girls, fortunately!)  One day, when I was cleaning their cage they escapes, and although I was able to catch one immediately the other two were loose.

One died in the process of being caught a coupel of days later, but the third was loose in the house for months before being caught!
