rhubarb question..
« on: June 21, 2012, 19:23 »
we planted some rhubarb last year from plants bought from a nursery. (I know, BUT, but no one on the allotment had any spare crowns!  ::)  ).
Anyway, they are growing well, but someone said not to pick it this year. Soooo....

What do we do with it? It is quite large now, do we leave it wilt on the plant, cut it down? (If so, when?)

Answers gratefully received :D

Once rhubarb starts growing, it's basically a maintenance free plant. Just leave the leaves alone and it will die back on its own for winter. In later winter you can clean up the fallen mess so new shoots can start. If you feel inclined, you can give the plant a yearly shovelful of compost or rotted manure in late winter but it's not necessary.

Since it's so young, if it looks a bit wilty from lack of rain, do water a bit this year and then you can stop. From many of the UK posts on here, I doubt lack of rain is a problem for many  :D

   That's probably why it's so big!
Thanks for the info, I will leave well alone.
