I used to use straw but it got wet and rotted. My strawbs are now in several troughs along a chest-high shelf (room for other crops underneath) with netting stretched over the wire arches from a couple of old cloches and bamboo supports across then pegged to the wire.
The shelf has been carefully positioned on a fence which faces the sun so the flowers and strawbs drape over the front. Keeps them dry and clean and makes them easy to pick!
Just need some sun now!

I use straw like Schubunny and have had no problems either.  Just round the strawberries though.

My strawberries are only little green things at the moment with little hope of much more if this weather continues. However, as the bunches form I lift them and place stones beneath to keep them off the soil. We have a great abundance of all sizes of stone,  so at least that is one use for them.

Stones?  Can't remember what they are!   ;)  We  don't get them around here on the fens!  When I lived in Kent though, we had loads of stones in our ground.

We get wood chippings delivered, as required,  by the local tree fellers. I have put a 3" layer around my strawberries. Not only does it keep the ftuit dry and clean, it also seems to keep the slugs and snails away as they don't like the rough chippings. The bed is also netted to keep the birds off. I have been harvesting for over a week now and have never had such clean un-nibbled strawberries.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.
