Egg Cracking!!!! Help
« on: June 06, 2012, 17:00 »
Hello all,

Recently my hens have started to recover from the bad uk weather and started laying an egg a day, which is excellent. However this past couple of weeks I've been going to collect the eggs and at least two have been smashed/broke, which is annoying. I've been given some advice on filling one of the eggs with mustard or something so that the hens won't like the taste?

Any idea?

Thanks

Hi

What age and breed are your girls?

Are the shells thin?

It might not be an egg eating problem, it could be that the eggs have thin shells and your girls are just clearing up which is exactly what they should be doing  :)

I have one who lays thin shells and sometimes shellless, if the egg is complete ie no cracks I get to have it.

Have you got enough material in the nesting areas.  Could they be cracking upon "landing"?  I pecked egg looks quite distinctive, compared to an egg which has cracked due to a hard landing... just a thought :)
