Butternut Squash are so slow to get going
« on: May 31, 2012, 21:34 »
I started to harden off my BNS seedlings too early and the true leaves showed wind burn (crinkled and losing colour) so I put them back in the greenhouse.

They have recoverd and I have the next pair of true leaves just sprouting. They spend the day outside to keep them hardy and get maximum sunlight and are brought into the cold greenhouse overnight.

I am concerned though that they need to go out very soon or I'll run out of growing season.  The pots (4 and 5 inch) are nowhere near root bound but it could be the compost has lost nutrients by now.

Would you plant out one on the allotment (once they have spent a couple of nights out) to see what happens? Then plant out the other three if all is ok.

Knowing your approximate location would help in answering. The UK climate can vary greatly from north to south, east to west.

Having it in your profile is useful for such times as these.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Camborne, Cornwall. About 15 miles north of Lands End. I will update my profile, thanks DD.

Hopefully mine are going this week and looking at your overnight temps for the next few days you should be more than safe to do so.

BNS are very slow starters. In fact the first lot I sowed refused to come up until after the second lot I sowed. I've now got 40 plants destined for a coffee morning!

I always find that they sit there doing not a lot and then suddenly think that autumn's coming and go rampant!
