I had an early night last night (woodworm in the head I think) so I missed this thread.  It is so sad when we lose a much loved animal

makes me wonder sometimes why I keep animals, it breaks my heart everytime one of them goes.

Take comfort in the fact that keeping and loving animals and really caring for them is what makes us the good people we are.  If we are kind and thoughtful to animals [and plants] everything else follows  :D

Your right Sadgit, I can't imagine how boring life without my animals would be, I too am starting to worry, my German Shepherd "Beau" is 10 years old now, he still follows me around like a little puppy (and acts like one sometimes), but you can see age is catching up with him.I don't think it matter's how much you try and prepare yourself, it still breaks your heart.

i know a dad who won't let his kids have pets so they wont get up set when "the time comes" how awlful is that! you could have many years of love and fun with them of course its painful but worth all those years with them, (i think he has that out look with people aswell)  :(
time is a great healer

Lots of sympathy from me, Slowef.  Its never easy losing a pet, whether a new member or older member of the family.  You'll have lots of lovely memories of Sam.  And the poor little chick - there's nothing you can do really with these little critturs that get so poorly so quickly.  Sending some positive vibes to you.
