staking tomatoes on the allotment, advice needed
« on: May 23, 2012, 11:51 »
i was going to put my toms on the allotment when they are a little bigger, now about 6" high. they are gardeners delight and super marmande. i was hoping for some advice regarding staking and spacing them.  do they need more then one cane each, or a wigwam each, im just not sure as the packet does not say anything about eventual height.
thanks in advance.

Super Marmande is one of those in-between types, usually described as semi-bush, so a wigwam might suit it well, although the official "blurbs" usually say it requires minimal staking.

Gardener's Delight is a cordon, so could grow 6' high - a single stake is fine but you might have to consider additional support for the stake if the site is windy.

What you shouldn't do is crowd the plants together - bad for growth, and likely to encourage blight.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

A fully laden tomato plant in a stiff breeze needs good support so don't stint  :)  Marmande fruits are heavy so a wigwam of poles or canes would be a good idea  :)

Have a look at this thread from last year. Free diagram included!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
