Well... some of you may remember that my two Burford Browns were picking on the Legbars and leaving them with blooming bums and necks. I decided in the end that it couldn't go on and bought a new hen house to separate them. I couldn't really afford a new house so spent alot of time researching and soul searching
But still came to the same conclusion- to give them a good quality of life they needed to be separated!
I am monitoring the situation though as it seems that the top Burford Brown (Demon Lilith) is picking on the other (Ruby, second in command Demon) so I might move Ruby in with the Legbars if Lilith continues to try and move her down in the pecking order! I've got this vision of all my chooks being in seperate accomodation with individual runs in the end
Anyway, back to the coop... In the end I picked up a Solway Mini Hen Coop... I wanted a well built coop that was plastic as I don't like cleaning wooden ones and i'm scared of red mite. I looked on second hand sites for a eglu etc. but they were still more expensive than the Solway one!
Anyway, the coop arrived last week and I'm really pleased with it :-) It's much more water tight than my other house (doodlehouse) and the chooks seem to like it! I'd be happy putting 6 chooks in there (which is what they suggest). There is only one nestbox which is nice and snug. There is no slot out bottom in the coop but that isn't a problem for me as I tend to "go in from the top" to clean them out. It's also got a lip on the bottom to stop 'em kicking all the bedding out (another thing I find with the doodlehouse). It's very light so easy to move around as well. My only issue with it are the plastic tie things that are used to secure the roof- they are annoying! However, I could easily use a bamboo cane or similar.
I can get some pics of it if any one is interested? I know how difficult it is trying to choose the correct coop for your chooks- i've been through it twice now
