Hi, this year I hope to grow tomatoes using the 'ring culture method'  on a bed of gravel 3" deep.  Question - What feed do you use in the pot?  Is the gravel kept soaked all the time?  Are 9" ring culture pots suitable for all varieties?

I think a deeper gravel bed is normally used.

Or any high potash, low nitrogen type feed, with a bit of magnesium and calcium in it if you can get it. I have spent hours standing reading the back of all the fertiliser packets in B&Q  (My case comes up next week  ) and there are some alternatives if you don't want to pay Tomorite prices.  Powder Phostrogen tomato fertiliser was economical, but they stopped making it.  

Some people make their own out of comfrey and suchlike, but I have no experience of this.

we did say 'Tomorite type' and not the brand. Poundshop do one that works..wonder how cheap that is
