Aggressive chicken
« on: May 09, 2012, 18:21 »
Hi,
I'ma first time chicken keeper. I have 4 hens, 0 cockerels. I have 1 very aggressive hen who is systematically perching the leg and rear downy feathers from the other 3 and then eating them!
At first I though it she was establishing her pecking order but she's the only 1 doing it and has not stopped

What's going on, in need help

Some people say this can be a lack of protein in the diet or not enough space/enough to keep them occupied. You can get feather pecking spray to deter the behaviour others get pecking bits to prevent it. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

give them a quarter or half a solid green cabbage to peck at

The gentian (purple) spray if the girls rear ends are sore from being pecked will help any wounds heal and deter her from further pecking

If they have space to engage in chickeny behaviour it should improve  :)
