Can you help me chose a weed killer?
« on: May 02, 2012, 12:14 »
At Tesco they have 2 weed killers one is a concentrate 1L (T Concentrated Glyphosate Weed Killer 1L) and a 3L one (Roundup) that's not a concentrate I am useless at maths can someone please try and work this out for me, and if the concentrate is the better deal or not please?

This is the concentrate, T Concentrated Glyphosate Weed Killer 1L £10.16p

MIXING 1 capful = 15ml Watering can application: Mix 60ml (4 capsful) of Tesco Glyphosate Concentrated Weedkiller in 5 litres of water to treat 25 sq.m. Use immediately after mixing. Hand-held sprayer: Add 100 ml of Tesco Glyphosate Concentrated Weedkiller to 1 litre of water to treat up to 40 square metres.

This is the roundup 3L £7.11p treats up to 90m2

If Its Not Growing... Its Dead.

you'll get 10 handheld sprayers from the concentrate, so you'll do 400sqm  - more than 4 times the ready-mixed for less than 50% more

concentrate is rarely more expensive. But do you need 400sq m?

savbo is correct, I buy the Wilkinson's own, it lasts for ages, also I add a splash of washing up liquid to the sprayer, this helps the weedkiller stick to the leaves and be more effective.

Thanks for that, no I dont need that much, 400 sq m seems like a lot, I will see if they do 500ml ones, its just for thistles that didn't die back after I put black plastic over the ground, everything else died back except for them pesky things, they have very deep roots

The reason i use Tesco is i live 1/2 a mile from the store and pass it all the time, my nearest Wilkinson's is in Hayes Town/c I will have to do a round trip of about 7 miles, and then pay for parking, so its not worth the hassle, and with the parking it will end up costing a lot more

You might think you wont need 400 m worth but I find I often have to reapply  - I tend to just do my path and edges and one application does not always kill things like brambles. I also have a fair bit of bindweed and again - it does suppress the bindweed but one application has so far not killed it off down to the roots. I estimate that a bottle similar to your 400m application will do me two years with a couple of applications on selected areas.

for what it's worth, I have a large bottle of conc Roundup that I use in my 5l sprayer, but bought a Not Famous Name 1l bottle of ready-to-use glypho for about £2 in local B&M, for use around the front garden. Sometimes worth paying a little for handiness - but not at Roundup's prices!

(and I did check that this bottle had the same amount of active ingredient as the Famous Name brands alongside)

ps you'd hardly believe I'm nearly organic would you? :)

The wife bought the 3L one I just got back and swapped it for the concentrate, didn't have 1/2 bottles so I got the 1L one, (last one on the shelf too) I need it for my front garden as well, so at least I know I have enough for 2 or 3 years, thanks guys

my roundup instructions give a range of concentrations depending on what you're treating. I tend to go towards the strongest...

Mine says 90g/l of glyphosate, is that about the norm?

Standard Roundup conc is 120g/l, the professional version is 360g/l though obviously that is for more dilution.

Probably need to use a higher strength mix from your concentrate instructions.

Seems the more glyphosate there is the higher the price, so it could be better buying a brand with more in as a concentrate then.... very confusing to walk around looking at all the bottles and a calculator

Often the dilution rates are different for the different strengths.  Most concentrates give you the area it will cover once diluted.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
