Do you think its wise?
« on: April 30, 2012, 12:42 »
Almost 2 weeks of continuous rain, this is the first day of real sun (and warmth) we have had, is it a wise move to go on to the plot and start planting/seeding? its still going to be wet under foot I think? (we need at least a few good sunny days until its dry I guess) I dont want to be compacting the soil, you think its best left for at least a few days before I go out there?

I am leaving off for a day or two.  Killing time today as I have to go to hospital  >:(  Not for me I might add

If it's too wet you can't do much. The soil will be claggy and soaking, stick to your boots and you'll knock the stuffing out of it

You could catch up with sowings  at home of things like beans and courgettes etc

I'm with compostqueen on this one. I'd give it a day or two before going down, you may do more harm than good to the soil structure.
It can't rain all the time.

I'd say leave it til tomorrow if it stays dry but I guess it depends on your local climate.  I was out digging and sowing some peas yesterday since it was dry all day sat and the patch was fine.  Its now peeing down again so doubt I'll be doing anymore for a while.
Add me on PSN but nowadays I reach for the fork or hoe more than a controller

I usually only get on at weekends to go whether it rains or not - I can usually do some tidying or sorting out netting for fruit or some other non digging job.

It depends on your soil, here my soil is sandy and I've been digging and sowing this afternoon with no problems ;)

Mine has a nice thin layer of water on top now, so I won't be digging for a while!  Thinking of converting it to a bog garden!

I put out some beetroot modules and sowed some raab this morning. It was damp but just about able to do it by using boards to stand on.

Its drying up here now, so going to venture out to the greenhouse for some more seed sowing.  Going to try and plant out into the raised beds at home, then may risk a plot trip to see if I can plant a few things that are climbing out of modules  ::)

My soil at home and at the plot is way too wet for seeds as well and more heavy rain forecast for Thursday ::)  Blinkin' droughts
