Coping with the deluge
« on: April 29, 2012, 16:46 »
Although we have been lucky enough to avoid strong winds (so far) we have had a tremendous amount of rain, meaning the lawn is under water. The chooks are coping fairly well, and we are definitely seeing an advantage to having a good amount of concrete. The chooks have been wandering between their coop, the garage and the odd paddle on the lawn, and of course knocking on the kitchen door. I may be crazy but even I draw a line at chooks in front of the fire! They're waggling their tails like ducks! :D

I'd love to take photos, but as soon as I go near the door they come running. ::)

How are others coping with the deluge?

Even with the concrete flags it is a mud bath. Our girls are all sitting on top of the raised shelter to get away from the mud. :(

Invited a soggy hen into the kitchen to dry off and eat some corn and was rewarded with gigantic watery poo - of course I forgave her - but - then another - so out with kitchen roll again - then another! Out she went!!!!!

well sun's out now and so is OH with the shovel.

The run is part mud bath part pond so he is shovelling up the mucky straw and is going to put down more.

The girls do look pretty unimpressed by the mud and water.

Have part concrete flags and part earth for scratching but thinking to go over to all concrete.

We now have a flock of happy hens. Once the run was cleaned out and loads of clean straw down you could see how happy they were. Sitting in the straw in the sun supervising me weeding
