Injured chook
« on: April 27, 2012, 18:46 »
We noticed today that one of chooks has been bleeding from where the comb meets top of beak.  We think it got injured while the girls and Eric were attacking some brocoli that we had hung up for them.  Bleeding now stopped - is it best just to leave well alone & let nature heel the cut?  Can anyone recommend anything eg antiseptic cream to have on standby in case something like this happens again?  They do love their hanging veg.
Thanks for any advice from a newbie chook owner.

If you have purple spray (gentian violet) you could dab some on with cotton bud as long as it's not near her eyes. I would be tempted to keep an eye on it and leave alone to let nature heal. One of my roosters occasionally catches his comb, and I tend to leave it to heal itself  :)

Combs have alot of blood in and any tear looks much worse than it is. If the blood has gone black, which it does very quickly as it dries, it's best to leave well alone. It's the smell and sight of fresh blood that can cause a pecking frenzy.
Keep an eye out for any more pecking though.......

I've used Savlon before and found that they seem to find it helpful: i.e. they don't try to remove it as they do for vaseline etc.
