Fruit
« on: April 29, 2012, 09:40 »
Hi,
Me again!!
I have a large plot that has half growing veg and the other side now seems to be fruit! It did have potatoes but I have decided not to do that this year, I have an apple and pear tree and redcurrant bushes that were there when I took over. Last year I planted Raspberry and Blackberry and Blackcurrants and a Gooseberry bush. Do you think I will get anything from the blackberry/currants and gooseberry this year? I only planted in about August?
I have strawberrys now in another section there too so they are in, planted them last week, do you think they will come through this year?
My other question is, what else could I put fruit wise in the section where the pots were? I want to fill the space with something! As glutten for punishment we have taken over the plot next door too so we need to get to work on that one too ASAP!!
Thanks,
Helen

your stawbs will probably fruit this year, but you will only get a few - they are more productive in years 2 and 3.

also you probably wont get anything off your gooseberries and blackcurrants as they are only young.

however you will most likely get some fruit off of your rasberries and blackberries as they fruit on new growth.  :)

you will find with all of your fruit bushes that you will get more and more off of them as the years go on.

regards other fruit what about blueberries - expensive to buy in the shops.

I bought three a while ago and planted them - got some flowers this year but not loads so looking forward already to next season where i am hoping for a reasonable (ish!) crop.

We grow all of the standard type fruits, so decided to try and get some plants that were a bit different. Two Honeyberry bushes that are supposed to be like blueberries but larger fruits, a goji berry which is meant to be a superfood and a crowberry, which i have no idea about. They were all planted last year so may see some fruit this year.

Blueberries need acidic soil which is kept moist, so have a good look at your soil before deciding to grow these.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thank you for your advice, I have just spoken to the local nursery and he has a cherry tree for £25 so I am going to invest in one of those!!

That should fill the gap as he said it needs about 5-6 foot around it.

Thank you again, anymore ideas please keep them coming!

I have another plot to fill once this one is busy!!
