Fluid pouring from hen's beak. Help please.
« on: May 01, 2012, 19:31 »
Oh dear,  looks like the second of my ex bats is poorly.  We've had them 18 months - they were 18 months old.

Little Henna is sat looking terrible.  tail down, almost gasping.  Very pooy bottom and I've just picked her up to inspect, and a load of fluid has just poured from her beak.  I've placed her quietly back on the grass away from the the others with water and some food, but no interest.

Please can anyone offer any advice asap.

Thanks as ever.

I'm not an experienced chicken owner but I am a paranoid one  and have read as much as I can about all manner of hen ailments. This sounds like the symptoms of sour crop. Sorry if you have already considered and dismissed this as a possible cause, but copious milky fluid from the beak is what my info gives as a possible sign. Hope your hen is ok.

Seems that way.  Pooy bum cleaned and dried, crop - emptied.  Been advised to feed some live yoghurt to combat the nasty bacteria.  See how she is in the morning.  She's sleeping in our house in the warmth tonight.

Hope she is feelig better this morning.

If you have her indoors try and keep her in a constant temperature and not too hot.  They don't like extremes of hot and cold.   ;)

Hope Henna is perking up. I give my four hens 2 dessertspoons of live yoghurt between them every evening.  If I've got freshly cooked veg available they have a spoonful of that chopped in, or sometimes a spoonful of plain cornflakes. They make a terrible mess and get it everywhere but they really love it.
