I'm allergic to manure!
« on: April 26, 2012, 20:44 »
Hi all!
I only got my lottie a couple of weeks ago and digging (etc.) is unfortunately going slowly due to the horrendous weather :( Luckily I've got loads growing at home for me to plant when the weather picks up a little :)
Just wondering, for future reference, if there is anything extra I can do to help my crops and my soil. I already have a type of green manure on my plot which I can dig into the ground; but I haven't got a lot of it and am unable to use animal manure due to allergies
My plot, as a whole, is in pretty good condition but if there is anything at all I can do to enhance what I already have then I'd love to hear it!
Many thanks,
Robyn xx

1) Bung your weeds (or comfrey leaves if you can get hold of it) into an old bucket of water (pref. with a lid), weigh it down with a brick, leave for a couple of weeks and add it to your watering can 1:10 dilution to feed your crops.  Do it at the end of the day - it stinks!

2) Dig a bean trench and fill it with uncooked kitchen waste, cover with some soil before planting your beans.

3) Start a compost heap to use for mulching and soil improvement.

4) Have you tried chicken manure pellets?  I use these and they are very good use and only need small quantities.  Keep the lid on, hold your breath, whip off the lid briefly to scoop out some pellets with a plastic cup and then put the lid on and breathe again.   They break down when water is added.  Warning if you haven't used them before - they reek (hence the holding breath thing!).
