Cucumber and munty frame
« on: April 24, 2012, 08:55 »
Never grown cucumber before so forgive the basic question but how much room do the plants take up?

I have a munty frame with 16 bits of string ready and waiting 8" apart.  As we don't eat that many beans, I'm thinking I could maybe do 5 runners, 5 french and use the remaining space for outdoor cukes?

Would I get 3 cuke plants in a space of 40" ish?

Ta

not a bad idea but you have to take the pain of training them up as they crawl rather than climb. I presume it is due the strong winds we face  :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

I do my cukes every year on my munty frame. I do twirl each plant stem up its own string, otherwise they'd take over and go everywhere I don't want them to. If you run short of string for them, then simply double up which is what I do. I use half my frame for runners, the other half for cukes. Just remember that cukes are very very thirsty plants and need daily watering.

For my outdoor cucumbers, I just stick a growbag next to any vertical surface that doesn't look busy and they scramble up it. Last year it was a chain link fence and the year before it was an espalier cherry tree :)

You could share a little, Prakash. It's so dry here that we drive through dust clouds on windy days for the last two months and more.  The ideal thing is if I could somehow funnel all the farm topsoil blowing around to land in my garden  ;)
