Eggs out of Nest
« on: April 16, 2012, 09:50 »
On Saturday morning, sometime between letting my broody out and checking on her a couple of hours later, 2 eggs (she is sitting on 9) found there way out of the nest.

Because they were so close to the edge of the nest i wondered if they had fell out accidentaly with the jostling about or had been kicked out (which i know is normal). They were still in tact and popped them back in the nest just to see what would happen.

Again this morning sometime between letting her out and checking on her (when i say checking, im not disturbing her but looking at the entrace of the coop to see if she had kicked anymore out, she cant see me) and again there were 2 eggs kicked out this time more forceably as they were some distance from the nest box.

1 of the eggs were very badly damaged and leaking a lot, the other one still in tact.

i opened the very badly damaged one and at least i know they are fertile as there was a tiny embyo with veins inside the white sac surrounded by what i will describe as thin advocaat.

Is the thin advocaat substance normal? having never cracked open a fertile egg before i dont really know what is normal, and also do i discard the other expelled egg that is still in tact.

Im sure my broody knows what she is doing and i dont want to interfere if necessary.

Today is only day 6 so a long way to go

many thanks

if she kicks them out then dispose of them - she does know what she is doing. The advocaat means it is addled and going off. she kicked them out to prevent any gasses from contaminating any viable eggs.
Staffies are softer than you think.
