Cauliflowers
« on: April 14, 2012, 01:01 »
What is the best time to plant out cauliflowers. I live in the north of England .
I will be buying plants to put in as I don't have a greenhouse or a cold frame yet.
I tried some all the year round ones planted in September of last year and they all came up blind no curds at all. Thanks john

Off the top of my head, as I don't have access to the packet where I am at the moment, despite its name All Year Round is not recommended for over winter growing.

You would need a winter variety like Walcheren Winter Pilgrim.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Good time to sow is now and through to middle of may to transplant in late june for autumn
caulis
They do need a lot of water and protection from a caterpillar attack
They prefer a firmer soil, so weed well, but dont break up the soil too much, this helps to keep the larger head.
I always place a leaf over the head to protect from the sun
I sow mine from now till mid may in batches so you dont have a glut all at once.

how many would you sow each time and how many successful cauli's would you expect to get?
with everything i always get a glut as just direct sow but this year im sowing in the garage in paper pots.
many thanks
these 2 take all my time, whatever is left the veggies get, poor hubby is at the end of the queue.

Make sure you harden the plug plants off before you plant them out. I know cauli's are hardy but plugs are normally grown in warm greenhouses so need hardening off .
