courgette dont look great pic
« on: April 13, 2012, 14:43 »
Hi there

I think these courgettes might need repotting, not had a great start, but I just didnt want to repot if they are gonna be in the ground soon. By accident I knocked one of them, and the other looks like it is dying.

I think you'll have trouble keeping them alive until may when you can plant them out.

Probably best to wait a couple of weeks and then start again

Blimey, they're a good size for this time of year. Mine (only 2 so far) are still seed-leaves and I think I've sown too soon.

Will be following this; interested to see what the more experienced growers think.

I've merged the 2 threads together  ;)

I thought that your courgette was in the pot above the leek - I can tell the difference you know  ;)

My advice still stands unless you have a warm greenhouse or conservatory to grow them on in, you will struggle as they get bigger, because it's probably a month before you can plant them out.

Remember that a frost will kill them (and a ground frost is possible even with an air temperature of around 4C) and temperatures any lower than around 10C (day or night) will set them back for much longer than it takes the temperatures to improve.

You need to keep them well lit, watered, and with enough room to grow for at least another month (probably 6 weeks or more if this year is anything like the last few.)

I am very unlikely to sow mine for at least another fortnight unless someone convinces me we are in for a continuous heatwave from now until the beginning of June.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

They are such fast growers that i would not consider sowing to the 2nd week of May, and i do not plant anything tender outside until the 1st of june.

If you want to stick with them, whether you repot or not, I'd say start feeding them.  My potted seedlings often get to a certain stage then stop growing and look sickly. A bit of general purpose liquid feed soon perks them up.

I didnt actually sow these, some neighbours at the allotment gave them to me which was really nice of them.

I said to them shall I grow them in the greenhouse and they said to me no, get them outside......  they grew them the year before successfully and said they were prolific, I assume it was the same timings as last year.  I will see them this weekend, so I'll ask them for more instruction.
