Yes, I like Defender too. Last year I tried a few of the Italian varieties but found them very space greedy, they were sprawling everywhere, whereas Defender stays a nice compact bush shape. I also like the round yellow courgettes, which are beautifully tender and sweet, either Summer Ball or Floridor or One Ball, they're much the same. If you only want one plant you could try Parthenon, which doesn't need pollinating.

All green bush - if you are only growing one variety - no contest.

 :D

They all end up as marrows (effectively) if you leave them on the plant long enough!!!
One of my colleagues will always have a giant courgette and stuff them like a marrow.

Previously, Defender have always got huge if I've left them. All green bush (3 plants) barely gave me a dozen courgettes last year and if I left them they tended to rot.
Never had that with Defender.

Trying 'Primula F1' this year for a change :)

I have always grown Defender F1 and have never had any complaints.  I'm a bit wary of anything that is an all rounder as often they are ok, but not great at what they do.  Like those all in one kitchen gadgets that do loads of things but not as well as if you had the individual items, if you get my drift. :)
Cheese makes everything better.

I think this is going to be an interesting challenge and well worth the effort of having a go this year.  If I can't get them locally then I will take you up on your very generous offer.

Game on. :)

For a newby to them I'd go Defender, max of three plants, other options (as folks have pointed out) Green Bush sprawls a bit less, Striato gives a lovely fruit, throwing a curve ball I'd suggest Rugosa Friuliana, generally thought of as a summer squash but lovely cut small for courgettes and pretty much unbreakable...finally Black Forests propensity to climb might make it easier to fit in and it certainly crops.... no more than three plants though or you'll be snowed in courgettes....
