So are we saying there's not much point in me buying any for clearing parts of the plot?

IMHO it will work fine for clearing your plot. You still have to dig it out though - hard work cant be avoided and im sure the stuff for professional use is there for a reason so i wouldnt try to go down that line.

Spray with a shop bought, leave it and then dig the roots out.

Not at all - there's a good reason to buy some if you do want to use weedkiller.  I use glyphosate based products once a year on stubborn couch grass, and it works OK.

It's best to get concentrate rather than ready-mixed product, and look at the recommended strength once diluted at the stated rate.  Some products are indeed weaker than others.

The best known trade name is roundup.  You can get own brand cheaper, although it's worth looking in somewhere like your local supermarket to see if they have the branded versions available on special offer.  Resolva is another brand name.  It includes a contact herbicide too, so that you can tell within a number of hours that you've sprayed the right bits.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You could even check a well known auction site for the stronger stuff which you can quite happily buy without a license.

I don't mind a bit of digging, but there are a couple of areas on the plot that could do with a bit of extra help

The difference between glyphosate in the garden centre and the agricultural stuff is the concentration. The label recommendations for both are the same. The agric stuff is more concentrated and needs to be diluted further. If you follow the label, which legally you must, the results will be the same.

A dribble bar on a watering can is the safest way to apply it as there are no fine droplets to drift on to other plants. Most garden centres have them for just a few pounds. A lot cheaper than buying a sprayer. If you are worried about adjacent plants being splashed put a plastic sheet over them.

Once the glyphosate is dry you can plant into the soil.

If you sow seeds or plant something like potatoes and a mass of weeds appears before they emerge you can safely apply glyphosate and kill off the weeds. Just be carefull that the seedlings are not just at the surface and you have not seen them.

Thanks Salmo, that's help me decide where I will actually use it now.

Just need a dry day with little or no breeze to apply it now :)
