Guidance needed moving stuff about
« on: April 10, 2012, 21:08 »
Hello everyone,

I desperately need some room in my coldframe now, so want to move some seedlings to the unheated greenhouse at the allotment that are currently in the coldframe or waiting to germinate on the windowsill, The problem is I just wont be able to go everyday to water.  Will it be okay to move any of the following:

In the Coldframe: calabrese broccoli, Brussels, leeks, spring onions, courgettes, sweetpea, sunflowers, nasturtiums, pansies

Windowsills (just sown so not germinated yet): pumpkin, butternut squash, basil, thyme, sage, parsley, mint, bedding plants, cucumber, melon.

I was going to move most of them to be honest.  I am just then left with tomatoes and peppers till June.  Keeping salad in coldframe so got regular access to it.

sorry long one.  I am guessing it will be fine to move the lot.  Also just to let you know I used a capillary mat attached with a piece in a bowl of water and it seemed to work well.

Cheers everyone
Amanda

Is the coldframe heated?
The only 1 id be a bit worried about would be the courgette if we get a frost.
Political Correctness-a concept based on the idea that its possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

No its not heated, and all my seedlings seem to be doing fine. My coldframe is sat on some decking with a layer of bubblewrap underneath with big bubbles.

Thanks Steved

PS I meant to also add can any of these go direct into the soil yet?  I expect not.

amanda all of your brassicas can be planted out now, aswell as the leeks and spring onions - aslong as you harden them off first.

courgettes pumpkin, butternut squash, basil......... bedding plants, cucumber, melon.

I don't know what your bedding plants are some are hardier than others, but the others really do need to be kept, day and night, at higher temperatures than a cold greenhouse will provide at the moment....

sweetpeas 9and pansies if big enough0 can be planted out as well, once hardened off

So the brassicas that are in my coldframe, by hardening off should I tomorrow let them sit outside in the day, pop them back in the coldframe at night, and then by Sunday I can put them in the ground at the allotment?  Oh how exciting!
