currant cuttings....
« on: April 07, 2012, 10:24 »
Hi!back from Australia and raring to start growing.
But about eight cuttings from , redcurrant, white currant  adn gooseberry bushes (which I stuck in the garden about 2 years ago, and I thought have died, have resurrected themselves while I was  away.
(well it is easter1)

So surprised to see them...they're all about a foot tall.Is it too late to transplant them down to the allotment?

I'd give it a go.. I've been potting up various soft fruit cuttings and seedlings this week (it's either into a pot or onto the heap as I'm rediscovering them whilst weeding).  If the ground is ready on the plot and you water them well until they get established they shouldn't have a problem.

If you have the choice, I would leave it until they are dormant, i.e. Nov - Feb.  It really is ideally too late to move them now we're into the growing season.

If you don't have the choice and have to move them now, make sure you prepare the new planting space first, then dig up the cuttings with maximum rootball and make sure you water really well all season - perhaps a problem if you have a hosepipe ban.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I agree with Yorkie.

At this time there are undergoing a real spurt in growth. To move them now could really knock them back.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
