Hi Tony and thanks for the link, I have found some other interesting reading in the bowls of the internet on the subject. And thanks to Mrs Apron for starting the topic.

I agree with you all on creosote. Now there will be something out there that will kill these little blighters and their eggs, and will not be harmful to the birds, and I expect it is quite simple and cheap. The interesting thing is how you have to kill them without a poison. and remember they have that shell.

Now when you know how to kill them there lots of stuff that could do this.it is just finding the best non harmful product.

If anyone would like me to start a thread on this so everyone can add ideas I would be only be to happy

Can I have some confirmation that Jeyes fluid is safe to use inside my coop?  Also, in the diatom slurry recipe, can I use Jeyes for the disinfectant part?

Thanks everyone. xx
No sense in being pessimistic It wouldn’t work anyway.

yes you can  :). Although I prefer to use Vanodine V18 which is an iodine based liquid and specifically for livestock. For a dry disinfectant I use Stalosan F again specifically for livestock and great in winter when you don't want things to get too wet.

There seems to be a confusion between a disinfectant (used for killing/controlling vegetative states of bacteria or viruses) and a pesticide which is the substance needed to deal with mites or lice. Creosote and its replacements are really for wood preservation and the mite destruction is a lucky side effect.  I'll leave Mark to follow up the DEFRA questions re hydrogen peroxide, but would point out that it will attack metals and some plastics and unless diluted, mixed and stabilised as in the commercial disinfectant variants it can be difficult to handle (proof on my old ceiling!).  The safest anti-mite has got to be DE because it is non toxic and works by rubbing and causes dehydration of the exoskeleton.

Thanks for that both of you, and for clarifying the difference between general disinfecting and mite killing properties.

A lot of sites and last year's Smallholding poultry mag advise not using Jeyes Fluid because of the Tar Acids,  (Poly)Alkylphenol Fraction (Phenol) which is toxic and harmful to animals if not allowed to dry properly.  Instead they suggest using V18.

http://www.jeyesprofessional.co.uk/media/511160%20-%20Jeyes%20Fluid4e312d8d196ae.pdf

However, the Jeyes safety pdf says "Use a solution of 250mls to 5 litres of water to disinfect surfaces against Avian Influenza"

http://www.jeyesprofessional.co.uk/media/511160%20-%20Jeyes%20Fluid%2008.pdf

I'm confused but think I'll stick with V18.

I get mine from a local pet supplies - perhaps ask yours if they can get some in. Stalasan can be quite heavy so if you have to buy over the net watch the postage costs.

Yes, it is and its available in powder or tablet form. The small tub of tablets might be a more viable option if you have to buy online.
