I'm trying some outdoor variety this year in the fruit cage.
Unwins "Burpless Tasty Green"
On the back of the packet it says to feed regular with a liquid fertiliser & not to remove male flowers as they are necessary for pollination of the female flowers

Ive grown Burpless in greenhose and outside for a few years now.
I feed mine with liquid tomato feed.
They are great croppers, and no removing of flowers necessary. They were still growing until October last year.
I build a cage around mine with canes and string, lets them easily spread and hang nicely.
I think the hanging helps the fruit, Ive found ones that drag over the ground do not do well.
Planted some in greenhouse earlier this week and will outside later next week.

I am not happy.

There's a huge variety of cucumbers available these days, variously described as indoor, outdoor, ridge, burpless, mini etc, any of which may or may not be F1 seeds.

I don't think the information is always presented clearly - I've looked at the offerings on the T&M website which quite helpfully describes how to grow the plants, but isn't very consistent when it comes to stating whether male flowers should be left or removed.

Only the all-female (parthenogenic) varieties set fruit without pollination, and although in theory they shouldn't produce any male flowers, they sometimes do, which is why they need to be removed to avoid bitter fruit.

(That's the relatively easy stuff - keeping the damned things alive isn't always quite so simple!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I grew Crystal Lemon last year, I fed it, watered it, cosseted it in the greenhouse, and got one measly fruit.  I did not know what they looked like so was very surprised to find that the 'unnamed squash' I had plonked in among the cabbages had grown 8 perfectly formed fruits.

Plants are so rude sometimes.

I must have been extremely lucky, as last year was my first time growing cucumbers (Burpless).
Planted them out and pretty much left them to it, didn't feed them, just watered well, and also left them to roam around on the ground.
Harvest was amazing, and had some very large cucumbers in the end, cropped for ages right up to mid October.

As well as my indoor ones, I grew Marketmore outside as well.

I just stuck them in one of my piles of horse poo. Need I say more?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grew a couple of cuc's in my greenhouse last year. My first time. I did get a few fruits but found it hard to keep up with removing the male flowers. I work 12 hour days so would go off to work in the morning and come back in the evening to find male flowers had sprouted. So I did get a very bitter cucumber at some point. :tongue2: Now I have a better idea of what they look like I hope to do better this year. I am also going to try "burpless green" outside as I have heard good reports of them.

I bought a small mini-cucumber plant for 50p from a roadside stand (complete with honesty box), near Dalby Forest last year.

Stuck it in the ground with the other squashes and courgettes, and just watered it when I watered them, and gave none of them any feed - we had quite a few mini cucumbers off it - well worth the 50p :D
