Will my plants re-grow ? Disaster today!
« on: March 29, 2012, 22:01 »
I arrived at my allotment this afternoon, walked through the buildings and into the garden.
There was next doors goat stood in the middle of my plot looking at me!
It had eaten my small cherry plum tree down to about 5'' tall (from approx 16'')with one leaf left on it,my raspberries have no leaves on neither has the tayberry and the strawberries have some bits left on them.
Luckily my cherry, plum and peach trees which are approx 6' tall just had a bit of slight nibbling.
Do you think they will recover this year?
Everything was growing really well and I am pig sick :(

The goat actually belongs to very good friend of mine or it would have been goat rogan josh for dinner tonight!
(I'm not joking about that)

It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

Hard to say with the cherry plum, but it might make a comeback. They're generally pretty tough. Only time will tell with that one.

Raspberries will likely send up more shoots but not sure if you'll get a crop this year, same with the tayberry. If the raspberries were everbearing, then you'll likely get something of a crop. Strawberries will recover and probably give you a crop this year.

We've all been through something similar so you're not alone here  8) You might want to purchase a very strong collar and chain for your friend's goat.

If the cherry plum is on its own rootstock it will probably be fine

If it is grafted, be wary of any growth that comes from below the graft --- I foolishly let a decomated apricot tree grow, withut considering that the leaves looked different to before.

Lo, and behold, a monster tree with huge spiky bits on it grew  ... and grew... and grew.... and is now, two years later, chopped up  :tongue2:

Goats and gardens don't mix!!

I do sympathise as I kept goats for a while ...... there is nothing more murder inducing than a goat happily munching your fruit trees down to stumps  >:(
