Shallot tips are yellowing
« on: March 27, 2012, 18:04 »
Hi all, the 20 Aristocrat shallots i planted right at the start of january have been planted out about two weeks now but they are getting a bit yellow in colour right on the very tips of the leaves. The ground has had no fresh manure added, and should be in good condition. Have added a few 6X pellets around them at planting time.
Any ideas?

They might have had a bit of frost damage on the tips but it's nothing to worry about. As long as you're sure the soil is in good condition, they'll recover nicely.

It could also be shortage of nitrogen. There could be plenty of nitrogen in the soil but it may not become available until the soil warms up a bit. Little you can do except wait.

The patch of ground they are in was lavished with garden compost last spring, had a crop of peas from it, then added some really old manure and grew some late lettuce so soil should be just right. Hope they will do ok as they cost a fortune!

That is exactly the sort of situation where you may have temporary shortage of nitrogen. Once the soil warms the organic matter will start to break down and make nitrogen available for the plants.
