Korean fir... can I lop the top off it??
« on: March 26, 2012, 21:06 »
Hi folks

I wonder if you can help. I have a Korean fir tree in my garden (Abies Koreana) but the tops looking a smidge wonky. I wouldn't normally bother but it's the first thing you see outside the house. Wondering if I can lop the top off it? It's about the height I'm happy with, but I'm not sure how it would respond? Have done a bit of searching which suggests that it 'tolerates pruning' but is topping it a step too far do you think?

By the way, the photo below only shows the top half of the tree. It's about 2m tall currently.

Many thanks

Boog

I don't know the answer, although I could google it too, however I'd say it looks as though it has been pruned before or has had a growth spurt, as at the level of the top of the rear light cluster on the car, it starts going spindly. I wonder if it would take a pruning back to  thereabouts to make it fill out...

It is, unfortunately, planted in the wrong place  :(

It will grow to about 30-50 feet tall and 20 feet wide.  Pruning may turn it into an ugly tree but the only other option is to remove it.  Unless you can keep it small it could remove water from your ground and cause problems with the house footings as it has a very strong shallow roots  :(

Really? Wow! Was in the garden when we moved here a year ago, and at a guess it was planted about 5 years ago.
