I just planted my potatoes as per the instructions - about 4 inches deep in the soil. Given the difference in temperature this week should I really put some fleece over them? I have a few fleece polytunnels that I bought cheaply last year so they're ready to be used.

You don't need to worry about covering your potatoes until they start growing, unless it is going to get super cold.  I think we are OK at the moment.

Once the leaves come up you should cover them over with soil of fleece if a frost is due.

Thanks. I didn't think it necessary but someone mentioned to me that it depends on how deeply they are planted and I didn't know how deep was deep enough.

It seems no matter how deeply you plant potatoes, they'll still pop out of the ground. So just keep an ear open for frost forecasts once they show those early leaves.

But don't make it too dificult for the little darlin's by earthing up before they see the rays of sunshine.     Cheers,     Tony.
