Loving the Sunshine!
« on: March 23, 2012, 13:16 »
It's good to see the hens enjoying the sunshine after a long grey winter.

They found their old dust holes, and are also making new ones now the ground has dried out in certain areas

Ive moved the coop out of the pen area to let the ground recover from the winter (the pen area turned into one giant mud patch) and have put it on the gravel area so they are free ranging all day at the moment.
In fact i cant think why i didnt move it before winter set in to avoid ending up with the mud patch. I will bear that in mind for next winter.

I thought one of my girls was getting a bit broody but she seems ok today.
We are getting some quails so hopefully if she is getting broody she may sit on some of their eggs as we have found in the past that they are prolific layers but dont sit. Since we dont have a cockerel, there is little point in letting her sit on her own eggs.
We shall see, another learning curve for us anyway.

It's funny watching them follow the sun around the garden in winter as the day progresses, we're certainly getting more eggs now the weather's warmed up. True about the dust baths, my garden looks like its been shelled there are so many craters in it, little b*****s.
