what would you do?
« on: March 24, 2012, 17:47 »
just planted 4 rows of my first earlies and got another 4 to go in and still got probably about 8 more rows of mains to go in also!

which now is going to take all one side of the allotment, which i was going to split and put beans and peas on to. i dont want to waste to potatoes and give the away or throw them away so was think will i have enough time to do beans and peas as the potatoes come up?

or what would you do? not much space anywhere else....

You should be able to get a crop of french beans after the early potatoes come out.  Also, if you are thinking of growing climbing french beans, I grow mine up sweetcorn and outdoor tomatoes.  1 bean per plant and I sow seeds at the base of each plant once they are 30-40cm tall  :)

The 1st early spuds are still going to be growing when you should be thinking of planting peas and beans.   You have got yourself a megga puzzle.

I would.  .  .  . . . .start off the peas and beans in guttering or small pots, then plant out in the bottom of the troughs between your earlies, after ensuring your spuds are fully earthed up.  The peas will get more water IF  it rains and hopefully be up and away when you dig up the spuds so any soil tossed to the side will not cover all of your emerging peas, beans.

Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I would grow the beans in plastic pots and then transpant once the potatoes are out - not sure you would have time for the peas tbh

I imagine that where you are crops mature a few weeks earlier than where I am, so I'm guessing you will be lifting your early spuds in mid-June, which should give even runners time to do their thing if started in pots and ready to go.

Not sure about peas - they're an early-season crop really which again I would guess are usually sown about now where you are.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

You can grow spuds in deep containers, but they will need watering & feeding very regularly, which will add to your work load. I bought too many last year and ended up growing some in flower beds  :D

This is generally not permitted on allotments (in the UK, at least).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Although none of us like waste, its not too handy to have loads of one veg when you could just sacrifice say, 2 rows of spuds, in that space you could have a couple of rows of whatever pea/bean that you want. You could always see if any other plot holder would like to swap some of your spuds for some seed. That way your not really wasting anything!
