Salsify and Jerusalem artichoke recognition
« on: April 14, 2012, 11:42 »
I sowed salsify in rows a few weeks ago and seedlings that look like wide, flat grass shoots  emerged.
I'm growing it for the first time and don't know what they should look like.
Have I got germinated salsify or am I growing lawn strips? ::) :D
Also planted the artichokes about the same time.
What am I looking for when they sprout?
Thanks o magi of the earth!!!

Salsify is very like a grass or even a bit like an onion. We have it coming up all over the place as a weed!

Artichoke shoots are light green and just like yer actual leaf as shown in kids colouring books, (pointed oval).     Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

The flat wide leaves are salsify.  Jerusalem artichokes look a bit like a sunflower when they come through.  Like Tony says, they are the classic leaf shape  :)

I'm going to plant some salsify soon so at least I need now what the seedlings look like. Artichokes going in soon as well
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength
