How about adding some lime to break it down a bit, make a raised bed with all the crumbly clay at the bottom, add some topsoil over it, and keep on adding compost etc.

It'll take a few years, but at least you'll have a decent bed to use...

Make a nice clay oven 

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a nice clay oven, liven up the barbies. Trouble is I don't think it's the right sort of clay. The stuff you dig out of the ground is nothing like the nice pliable clay you do modelling with, is it. This stuff is so solid you'd have trouble bending it, no matter how much water you added.

My grandmother used to use garden clay to throw pots - from memory the refining process involved a lot of washing/rinsing/settling in old tin bath tubs, but the results were pretty good. I'm sure there will be a page on how to do it on the web somewhere

Someone once left me a load of clay on my desk - I didn't know what to make of it!

Sorry - I would be tempted to add it a little at a time to my compost bin - you should find the worms mix it in and give you better compost.
