Moving to a New Plot, what can I move?
« on: March 12, 2012, 11:49 »
Need a little help!

I'm moving to a new plot, well about 4 feet from the old plot, accross the Pad, but better as it has a shed....

My question is what can I move?

Have Cabbages - various types  in the ground and in a large raised bed, plus Garlic in a raised bed, an Apple tree and current bushes, quite young,  a few very young leeks and an old nobbly root of Chard.
I Love My Lottie, My own little hideaway and Gym:)

Spring is rushing in a little early this year - recent fine warm weather have triggered a lot of stuff into growing which makes it a little borderline for moving fruit bushes and trees now.  Definitely have a go at moving the fruit bushes and try and keep the roots undisturbed in as much soil as possible.  As for the tree ... I managed to kill an apple tree that I tried to move after just one year in the ground, so unless you can dig deep and avoid damaging the roots, I would most likely leave it.

Leeks - still time to sow more
Chard - it will go to seed soon so not worth moving
Cabbages - harvest what you can of any mature ones, and transplant the others.
Garlic - I'd be inclined to leave them myself

The garlic should move as long as you don't damage the cloves when digging them up - but it all seems a lot of trouble if all you will gain is a shed

Is the soil on the new plot better or worse? that's what is most important after all.

I agree with BabbyAnn, but I'd move the apple tree too and as a matter of urgency (before it start to grow too much). In my opinion its worth trying to move the apple tree, they are a lot more robust than you might think (but its all about the roots!) I'd pinch out any flowers to prevent fruit from setting, that way all the energy will go into the tree.
I'd also move the currant bushes ASAP. Then I'd dig up and move the garlic with as much root as possible. Harvest the leeks and cabbages and compost the rest...

But what do I know.....!

If moving the tree / bushes, make sure you dig & prepare the new hole before you start digging up the plant.

Others are correct that you need to take the biggest rootball possible (replace the hole on plot 1 with the soil you've dug up from plot 2), and preparing the new hole first means that you minimise the risk of root damage by drying out during the move.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
