pea support?
« on: March 08, 2012, 19:14 »
I put twigs to support my peas, but they ignore them and crawl about all over the place and climb up the netting I have to use to stop the birds from eating the flowers.

I have tried the plastic pea netting, but it is 5 or 6 foot tall and the peas only grow 2' tall, and I don't find it very successful.

It says on the packet that they are self supporting, but with no support they dangle all over the ground and slugs eat them.

Any advice would be appreciated.

yeh i leave the climbing support method to DD, but can i ask why you are only growing 2ft tall peas - why not grow some that reach 5ft, then they will reach the top of the netting.

hi,
my allotment plot has two feet high wire mesh fencing/ pig wire fencing with wooden stakes for support.

you can plant each side of the fencing wire giving a prolific crop..

The peas will intertwine with the fencing supporting the crop..

keep it organic and you will see the difference including taste......

That's all I was going to do - post the link - it says it all!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks, all. Very useful information there. Great pictures explaining it all.
The reason that I grow 2' peas is that I could not get any others. I did grow alderman one year up netting, and they did behave well, but they got mildew.
