I would suggest now, when it's starting to grow and needing it.

But not, of course if it is fresh.  You will ruin a good crown if you do.   

As an aside, if you intend to force this crown, do so but afterwards leave the forcing pot off and do not take any more stalks.  This will allow the crown to recuperate over the year.      Cheers,     Tony.

it's not fresh, bought from a well known DIY store. Will place around the crown and lightly fork it in, Cheers folks.
