« on: February 27, 2012, 04:48 »
Usually grow arran pilot, this year thought I would try some pentland javelin as well.
arran pilot are chitting well, pentland javelin very slow to start to chit, however looked at them yesterday, and a white frothy liquid is oozing out of 2 tubers, never seen this before, and the tuber is soft and mushy, needless to say I chucked them out, what could this be??.Hope the others are not affected.

Spelling of "Arran Pilot" corrected for search purposes

We had a very cold spell a few weeks back, were they on there then?

Mine are in the greenhouse, but it's heated to keep the frost off, even so, during that spell it went down to - .5C with the heater going full pelt!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have only just moved them into the greenhouse,(4 gays ago). They have been in my workshop,(unheated). It would have been jolly cold, but out of the frost.Since I put the first post on,another 2 have been affected.Looks like a trip to the garden centre, for another bag.(if there is any left).
Just a thought, why are the arron pilot ok,it just seems to be the pentland javelin???.

May be because differetn potatoes have different water contents, or perhaps due to a slight variation in temperature where they were between the two

If I remember correctly Lincolnshire had some of the coldest temperatures anywhere in the country in the recent cold snap - only a very well insulated unheated building would stay above freezing in those conditions I would have thought.

As Sunny says, there was probably a difference in water/sugar content between the two and/or a crucial difference in position which just tipped the balance.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks to all for your thoughts on this, sounds plausable,i.e water/sugar content.
Yes your right it has been blooming cold here in Lincolnshire,ah well lesson learnt.
Shan't be doing that again.
Cheers.
