Run roofing in windy conditions?
« on: February 21, 2012, 12:10 »
We have a 3m x 3m walk in run with a weldmesh roof which we built last summer and wanted to cover it to help keep it reasonably dry during the winter. My hubby said that we couldn't put a plastic etc roof on it as it can be very windy in our garden and it would take off so we covered it with a plastic tarp but it makes such a racket when the wind gets up and we have already had to replace it once because it got ripped to shreds on a particularly windy night. Does anyone else have a problem with gusty conditions in the garden and how have they faired with roofing their runs. I need to convince hubby. Thanks
One husband, three teenage sons, one completely blonde dog, two scatty cats, five nutty chooks and an uninvited mole!

Hi, I had the same problem backing onto open land, very exposed.
Like yourself I have a large walk in run which I covered with ply, then covered it with heavy duty felt. I glued down the felt as well as nailing, and sealed all the edges, dont want red-mite getting under. Fibreglass sheets, or bitumin would be better as felt needs to be laid carefully and sealed..Aden..

It's very windy here. I;ve used plastic sheet, but put the support timber over the top and screwed the plastic to the bottom. Works quite well, stops the flapping and breakage with "normal" construction.

My run is exposed and I covered half of it with corrugated plastic sheeting and fixed it as per the manufacturers instructions and it has been fine. The other half is covered with a tarp and as you say it blows about and can be noisy. Chickens don't like it all and head for cover when it gets windy.

Ok there is a few ideas here to chat over with hubby. I must say that e chickens seem to just ignore the noise of the sheeting so that's not too much of a problem but there run is close to the house, better than near the field and mr fox, so it disturbs us more and probably our neighbours although they have not mentioned it. Will put my thinking cap on now. Thanks all

If you were to use roofing felt, red mite do have a knack at getting in anyway. If this happened you would need to take it all off and burn it. So one of the other solutions may be preferable. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Hi sassy, yes I agree and wouldn't have used felt as I feel sure I would be tempting fate with the dreaded red mite. I think I have managed to put his mind at rest and after another windy night last night I think we may be planning a DIY project for the spring lol
