Potatoes in bags - earthing up
« on: February 19, 2012, 22:42 »
Apologies for another tattie question

We use potato bags a lot and have always earthed up the bags.

But I was reading Thomson and Morgan's 2012 catalogue they've popped through the post, and they are suggesting there is no need for this - link below to the two tier planting without earthing up (but their video at the bottom of the page still describes the earthing up method !)

http://www.thompson-morgan.com/how-to-grow-potatoes-in-bags

I've also never planted 'bagged' potatoes in tiers either.

Any thoughts welcomed on whether we should be planting our bags this way  :)

Just what I was wondering a couple of days ago when I was on their site Shoozie...great minds!  ::)

I'd be willing to give a few planters a go to compare results auntiemogs  :D  I can't find any more info on their 'trial'.

They may be right but those bottom spuds have an awful lot of growing to do before they reach the light
Whereas with gradual earthing up the leaves get a chance to make some food before they get earthed up again.

If you do try it, don't forget to let us know how you get on  :)

Thanks - I'll certainly give it a try with a couple of bags - but, just a couple, in case it's a complete disaster  :D

I only have a few bags and seeds but might give it a go with a bag of pink fir apple as that's what I've got the most of.
I think you grow these Mum, so how many would you recommend to a potato planter like the T&M ones?
Mags  :)

They seem to suggest 5 tubers to one of those planters.  However, I'd have thought no more than 2 maincrop tubers in order to avoid overcrowding.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks Yorkie, that's what I was worried about.  Will be interesting to see which is better as I don't have the space for a potato bed. :)

if you take their underlined link to potato grow bags they are 40L bags and they say grow 3 or 4 spuds.
I plant 3 in my 35L tubs  ;)
