pallets for raised beds
« on: February 20, 2012, 22:33 »
Now that I am not building a compost system and using the daleks I have 8 heavy duty pallets.  As anyone got any inventive suggestions on what I could do with them.  I plan on making a raised bed for herbs and carrots that will be in an L shape.  And also two containers just for show and painting them up, and then putting normal pots within them.  the pallets are heavy duty ones so seem really strong.  I could use them at the allotment too I suppose.

Thanks
Amanda

I saw somewhere of using a pallet as a hanging garden which I've seriously been thinking of doing with strawberries - line and staple the inside with heavy duty weed suppressant fabric (you could put 2 equally sized pallets back to back for support as an island feature, or fasten the back of the pallet against a wall) and stand the pallets so that the wood is horizontal rather than vertical.  Nail wood on the sides so that it makes a container.  Fill with compost/soil and plant flowers or whatever on the top and through the fabric between the wood like you would a hanging basket  ;)

They are pretty arent they.  It looks really good.

As for the shelter nice idea, but the wood takes up a whole bed and a half on the plot so would take ages to build a shelter big enough, and a lot of labour involved moving it all again!  No thanks, it is just being burnt we have set up two wigwams of it to burn.

Great idea this, I have an endless supply of pallets at work and have already earmarked a couple to use as a herb planter at home and a strawberry planter down on my plot.

I am also going to be using the wood to build a raised bed for my eldest boy to use on the plot, the good thing is that if any of the wood starts to rot I have a good supply waiting to replace it.

Looks like a really good idea. I was thinking you could use the pallets as supports for the strawberries in plastic milk conainers idea. See  http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=59213.0
Just stand the pallets up against a boundary, hedge or shed and screw the containers to them.If this is no good then let the pallets support each other.
