planting horseradish
« on: February 27, 2012, 07:55 »
i have a pot with some horseradish in it and it really needs planting out.
what is the best way to do this so it doesn't take over the plot.
i plan to put it in a raised bed with my herbs and have lots of space for this.

The best way to plant it out so that it doesn't take over the plot, is not to plant it out!

However, if you're really intent on it, sink a heavy container into the plot and grow it in that. It'll need to be something tough, I suspect horse radish will burst the sides of something like a plastic bucket.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Growing it in concrete will certainly stop it spreading  ;)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Slightly off track.....Has anyone grown it from a whole root bought at a veg shop (organic)?
From what I understand you can grow from bits of root?

For years we had a huge clump of the stuff near the Lottie entrance - everyone could have a share of it when they wanted. No one had any on their own plot as far as I know.

Then came the car park... eventually the poor old thing was dug up despite trying to come back up through the tar-mac they "did it in"  :(

Best advice is to encourage someone else to grow it on their plot and swap something else for it when you want a chunk of root.

Sounds a lot like peppermint. It was growing loose in my garden when I bought this place, and it took me 3 years of hard graft to finally get rid of the last of it.  >:(

Worse than the rhubarb my dad kindly grew for me from seed.....pots and pots of it!

It took me 3 or four hours to finally dig up the last bit of root... left a small hole somewhere in Australia!

(Dug up because the variety was not the best - I did feel guilty but it had to go!)

A few years back, a former member of the forum showed us a picture of their plot. They had taken it on after it had been rotavated by the council. It seems the previous owner had been keen on growing a lot of this stuff for whatever reason.

The plot was now literally covered in it, having successfully chopped the root into bits and re-planted them all. This had reduced the member to tears. Fortunately the council swapped them to another plot, but this one was now useless for cultivation.

those photos gave me nightmares! I'll never think about growing horseradish after seeing them. Council probably had to use Agent Orange...

Typo in my original corrected.

You remember them as well!

Mrs Digger's plot has some on it. Still not fully eradicated it after 6 or 7 years.

My daughter's first garden had some planted in it, presumable in the corner, as that was where the largest and densest growth was.

They lived there for five years --- still some for the next owners to enjoy
