transplant gooseberries and blackcurrant
« on: February 15, 2012, 20:35 »
I have a couple of gooseberry bushes and a blackcurrant plant which have been doing badly; I planted them a few years ago before I realised that I'd put them in what is playground sand masquerading as soil.

Is it safe to move them now to what should be a happier place, do you think?

No sign of life so I'm thinking it'll be ok, but you never know.

Should be fine at this time of year. Try and get as much root as you can and put some well-rotted organic matter in the planting hole.

Well all the allotment books say that this is the time of year to plant them so I would go for it.

One of two things will happen, they will live and flourish or they won't and as they don't appear to be flourishing now what have you got to lose.

Take as much root as you can and plant them in some good compost and say the magic words! Grow you beggars, grow. I would put a handful of multi perpose fertiliser in as well.

Thanks for the replies!

I'll move them and hope that they don't die!

Is it too deep? If not so, you can just manure them.

That's an option- what fruit they have produced tends to be swiped by the local birds, so I'd like the bushes in the garden where it's easier to keep an eye on things, same with late frosts etc.

I've had one blackcurrant in about 3 years! It did taste nice, though.

When my dad moved any currant family plants, he always made sure he dug around the plants at a distance to make sure none of the roots were damaged in any way and he got all of the root ball.
