Pepper & chillies are more suited to greenhouse/polytunnel conditions and we didn't have the warmest summer outside.

Tomatoes & cucumbers are OK outside - subject to variety. The plants also suffer if they are planted outside too soon, or without hardening off. Can you remember what variety they were - and I take it they were put in as plants?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I noticed that you'r in Southampton.Would seaweed be an option.I used a lot until this year when I got a plentiful supplie of horse poo.I would just put it somewhere so the rain washed the salt out before putting it on the soil in the autumn.It does shrivel up a lot and you will need much more then you thing you would But if you can get it free on the high tide mark it's a win/win situation.
