Hello. I am planning to erect a fence all the way round my (small) allotment plot, mainly to keep out the rabbits. This fence will be made of 3' chicken wire and sunk into the ground 1/2'.

To dress up this fence I would like to grow something along its length, preferrably raspberries or similar. would they grow happily along this or does it need to be taller? Or is there anything else someone can recommend for me to try? Obviously I don't want to grow anything too tall that would cast shadows on my neighbour's plots.

Any advice would be appriciated, Joe

For some reason, I can't argue with that!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Check your tenancy agreement 1st some site's don't allow, fruit bushes and trees grown along the borders .
Rasp's would grow along that ok, you could bend the tops over as they got higher. But also consider how wide the plants you decide on may spread out in 2- 5 yrs time.

I'd avoid anything which will be more than about 4-5' high.

Some of the fruit bushes would do the trick.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Some nice Espalier fruit trees? Or trained somewhere between a step-over tree and an espalier in height?
Grapes?
Some nice small variety of squash to ramble along the fence?
Outdoor ridge cucumbers?

We have thornless blackberries and logan berries along ours, plus a tay berry  :)

Ditto Sunshineband. I also have  two gooseberry plants trained along a fence, takes a couple of years to train  but makes for easier picking.

We too have chicken wire as a rabbit proof fence (not sure if it's 100% yet  ;) ) and today I was looking at it and thought the same thoughts as you.

Would the rabbits not eat the pea/squash plants though?  From the otherside that is?
