An interesting soft fruit required.
« on: January 15, 2012, 20:11 »

As I have moved the Goji berry bush and the Rhubarb crown from the soft fruit cage, I now have room for an 'interesting' / 'unusual' fruit bush.   At present I have White, Red and Black Currants  in there, anyone out there got a suggestion for an erect (6 foot max height) shrub?   ::)   Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

You could train a sea buckthorn berry shrub to 6 ft. They're not so hot for fresh eating, but they do supply incredible amounts of nutrition done in jams and juices.

The sea buckthorn is the one with squillions of orange berries that are practically impossible to gather as they burst so readily?     Don't think I'll go with that one.    Cheers,    Tony.

Jostaberry  - cross between a gooseberry and blackcurrant I think. I haven't got one but have taken a couple of cuttings from one on our site.  Lovely as a pie filling or jam

DT Brown has Salmonberry in their catalogue.  Erect shrub to a max of 1.5m related to raspberries and blackberries.  Pink flowers followed by orange fruits which can be eaten raw or made into jam, jelly or wine.

Looks pretty interesting  :)

Fig?

I was very tempted but we just don't have the space (small garden at home and fully-stocked half plot at the allotment).

I'm trying a couple of honeyberries in amongst my soft fruit - don't know if they'll work, but the name got me interested in the first place!

Thanks for all your suggestions, I've just been and dug the Sunday Suppliment out of the recycling bin to see all those "Never to be repeated offers"  non there - all gone ! ! !   Must be the time of year.        Cheers,    Tony.
